Chemical Abstracts
Chemical Abstracts provides the most in depth indexing and abstracting coverage available of the research literature published internationally in all areas of chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, and related areas. Chemical Abstracts regularly monitors over 9,500 journals, relevant patents from patent offices around the world, conference proceedings, reviews, technical reports, books, dissertations, Web preprints, and more. Complete electronic coverage of this literature extends back to 1907 with some small coverage available for the literature published before 1907. Chemical Abstracts is the most comprehensive index available for identifying research literature in all areas of chemistry.
In its electronic form, Chemical Abstracts is composed of the following two main parts:
CA
--covers the literature from 1907-present plus 7,600+ records for pre-1907 journal articles
--updated weekly
--cited references are included for journals, conference proceedings, and basic patents added to the CAS databases from 1997 to the present
--does not contain the full text of the articles, books, and other documents
REGISTRY (REG)
--covers the chemical literature from 1907-present, includes tens of millions of sequences from GenBank, plus information from additional databases
--updated daily
--contains records that are created as substances of all types (inorganic and organic) are identified in the chemical research literature and other databases; each substance is given a unique CAS Registry Number which can then be used to identify research publications dealing with that substance through the CA file mentioned above
--contains a wide variety of information about the substances including structure diagrams, alternative name(s), and molecular formulas
The CA and REGISTRY files can be accessed via SciFinder Scholar or STN, a commercial database vendor. SciFinder Scholar is a software interface used to search the databases and is available 24 hours per day. The Chemistry Department's account with STN can be accessed during the following hours:
from 12 a.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday
from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. each day Monday afternoon through Friday morning
from 5 p.m. Friday to 9 p.m. Saturday
STN and the databases can be accessed in the following ways (see the Science Librarian or your Chemistry professor for the appropriate login id and password):
STN on the Web (Academic Login)
--requires a login id and password--you are prompted to enter an "Academic Port" as well, for us, the academic port is "c" (without the quotes)
--requires knowledge of specific commands
--a structure plug-in is available for both PCs and Macs which allows a searcher to draw and then search a graphical structure(s) against appropriate databases
--contains an automatic transcript option which creates a copy of the search session (the transcript can then be edited, printed, saved, etc.)
--provides active Web links for viewing the complete citations and/or abstracts of the cited references found in the CA file
STNEasy
--requires a login id and password
--a Web-based interface that does not require the use of specific commands and prompts for input via drop-down boxes and forms
--provides fewer searching and display options than the interface above
