Loan Rules
All recordings may be used in the Listening Room. Videos
and DVDs may be viewed in either the Listening Room or AV
Center. You will find some materials housed or on reserve
in the AV Center. The online catalog will direct you to
the appropriate location, or please stop by or call Randye
Jones (3365), Listening Room supervisor, or Ralph Helt (3073),
AV Center supervisor, for assistance in locating the audio
or visual material you need. The following rules apply to
items being checked out from either location:
Faculty and Staff (excluding Music Faculty)
Recordings-CDs circulate for one week.
Recordings-Other ( LPs, cassettes, reel-to-reel)
may not be checked out (for example: LPs do not circulate.
Some CDs may be designated noncirculating.)
Videos/DVDs may be checked out for classroom or
private home use. Library-Use Only videos/DVDs may be checked
out for a class or in preparation for a class. Depending
on whether they are at the AV Center or the Listening Room,
you will need permission from the Listening Room supervisor,
a Circulation supervisor, or a Reference Librarian, or the
AV Center supervisor. Videos and DVDs circulate for one
week. There is a limit of ten items per person. If the videos
or DVDs are for classroom use, the Listening Room supervisor
may make an exception to this rule.
Music Faculty
The loan rules are the same as above with the following
exceptions:
Recordings-Other (see above for description) may
be checked out without prior approval, but they must be
checked out by the Listening Room supervisor, a Circulation
supervisor, or a Reference Librarian. They are checked out
for one week. All recordings are located in the Burling
Library Listening Room.
Students
Recordings-CDs may be checked out. They are due
by closing time of the next day the Listening Room is open.
There is a limit of four items per person.If a student is
an authorized student assistant, s/he may check out CDs
for the designated faculty member. Authorized students must
have their own ID and the faculty member's ID or ID number.
(All recordings are located int he Burling Library Listening
Room.)
Recordings-Other (see above for description) may
not be checked out (except for faculty by authorized student
assistants).
Videos/DVDs may be checked out. They are due by
closing time of the next day the Listening Room or AV Center
is open. There is a limit of four items per person.
Grinnell Residents and Visitors
Townspeople may not check out Listening Room or AV Center
items.
Equipment
Headsets are available at the Burling Circulation Desk.
None of the Listening Room equipment may leave the Listening
Room. Four portable CD players are available for use when
numerous CDs are needed. However, they must stay in the
Listening Room. If they are removed from the Listening Room,
the college reserves the right to deal with violations through
the Judicial Council. For more information about equipment

Borrowing Instructions
A valid Grinnell College ID is required to check anything
out of the Listening Room.
The fine for overdue videos and CDs is $2.00 per day.
Borrowers are responsible for the full replacement cost
of lost or damaged material, plus a $20 processing fee
and a $10 service charge.
Borrowers may not charge admission when using videos or
DVDs, nor may these materials be used for fundraising or
other commercial purposes.
All videos and DVDs in the collection are loaned to individual
users for their private use or for educational use. They
may not be used or shown as part of any public program without
the approval of the copyright owner. Please see Randye Jones,
Listening Room supervisor, to discuss public performances.
The libraries may be able to assist you in seeking permission
for this. Some videos and DVDs come with performing rights.
Student assistants may be given the authority to check out
Listening Room or AV Center items for faculty. Please speak
to the Listening Room supervisor for more information.
Overdues & Bills - Students
The fine for overdue videos and CDs is $2.00 per item per
day. Overdue notices are sent via e-mail. After three overdue
notices, a bill is sent. The bill covers the replacement
cost of the item, plus a $20 processing fee and a $10 service
charge. If the item is returned, the bill is reduced to
the accumulated fines but does not exceed $20.
Listening Room staff are not notified when these notices
are sent; they are sent automatically by the system. If
there is a problem or you wish to dispute a charge, contact
the Listening Room Supervisor directly as soon as possible.
Overdues & Bills - Faculty/Staff
Faculty are not charged fines for overdue materials.
However, after 24 months, if the item has not been returned
or renewed, you will be charged a replacement cost for each
item. See the Faculty

Recalls
Students may recall Listening Room and AV Center items
unless they are on reserve. Please speak directly to the
Listening Room supervisor.
Faculty may recall Listening Room items. Please speak directly
to the Listening Room supervisor.
