Configuring Firefox for Off Campus Access on a Mac
These instructions are for Firefox version 2.0 and above. We recommend that you download the latest version of Firefox (free download) if you do not have at least version 2.0.
We also have instructions for Firefox version 1.5.
To check which version of Firefox you have:
- Open Firefox.
- Under Help, select About Mozilla Firefox.
- The major version is shown as a number followed by a decimal point (like 1.5), plus more numbers for the "minor" version. (You don't need to worry about the minor version.)
Configure Firefox 2.0 or Above for Off Campus Access
- Open Firefox.
- In the top menu bar, click the Firefox menu, and then click Preferences...
- In the Preferences menu that pops up, click on Advanced and then click on Network.
- Click the Settings button under Connection, in the Network tab.
- In the Connection Settings menu that pops up, click the button next to Automatic proxy configuration URL.
- In the text box, type: http://cat.lib.grinnell.edu:8080/proxy.pac (It may be easier to copy and paste the URL from here.)
- Click OK to close the Connection Settings menu.
- Click the red button in the top left corner to close the Preferences menu.
Your browser should now be configured to access library resources from off campus. You do not need to restart your browser.
One more thing...
When you try to access a licensed resource, you will be prompted to type your campus username and password.
Now you should be able to access library databases and indexes as well as electronic course reserves. If you have any problems, please contact Gail J. Bonath - bonath@grinnell.edu, 641-269-3358 or Sheryl Bissen - bissen@grinnell.edu, 641-269-3359.
