How to Request an Interlibrary Loan
Requests may be submitted electronically via the library catalog. Make sure all information is accurate and complete and remember to check the catalog to be certain we do not already own the material.
For Journals, Newspapers and Magazines also check for electronic content available through the Grinnell College Libraries:
Written requests will be accepted but take longer to process. Please contact the Interlibrary Loan department for more information at ext. 3005.

Purpose of Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary loan is a service provided to obtain materials for study and research that are not available in our collection. The conditions of this service are set by the National Interlibrary Loan Code, 1993, (adopted by the American Library Association), local agreements, and the regulations of individual libraries.
Those Who May Use Interlibrary Loan
Students, faculty and staff of Grinnell College may request materials through interlibrary loan.
Materials Available
Books, scores, government documents, and some materials reproduced in microform are generally available. Photocopies of periodical articles can be requested in accordance with the U.S. copyright law. Dissertations are less readily available, but occasionally may be borrowed.
The following types of materials generally are not available through interlibrary loan:
- books owned by Grinnell College Libraries but temporarily in use
- periodical volumes
- newly published books
- un-microfilmed newspapers
- bulky or fragile items
- reference books
- audio and video tapes
- rare or valuable materials such as manuscripts
Time
Plan ahead when requesting materials. Allow two weeks to search, process, and receive each request. Please speak with a reference librarian and the ILL department if your research will require extensive use of interlibrary loan materials.
Cost
The Grinnell College Libraries pay the costs involved to borrow materials.
Notification
Photocopies are sent through Campus Mail. All other materials are held for you at the Circulation Desk and you will be notified by e-mail when they arrive.
Loan Period
The loan period is determined by the lending library and is usually 2-4 weeks. Renewal requests should be made to the Circulation Desk 4 days in advance of the due date.
Restrictions
Lending libraries determine any conditions regarding the use of their materials.
Limitations such as
- no renewal
- no photocopying
- in-library use only
must be honored.
Returning Materials
All materials borrowed through interlibrary loan must be returned to the Circulation Desk on or before the due date. Materials may be recalled by the lending library at any time and must be returned immediately. Please leave all slips attached to the item. Returning materials late jeopardizes our ability to borrow from other libraries in the future.
