Historical Note:
The Grinnell College library began in 1853-1854 with 1200 volumes; by 1860 there were 2500 volumes. Beginning in 1862-1863 various faculty served as college librarian. In 1889 the college hired its first, full-time librarian. These facts and the following list of librarians were found in one of the files from the Early history of the library (Series 9.2) and in Margaret Fullerton's chapter on the history of the library in John Nollen's Grinnell College (1953).
